This developing series explores fierce creatures, stormy weather, and coastal habitats (beach, bay, bayou, marsh, and swamp) along the Gulf Coast. For this series, my color palette includes ivory black, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, quinacridone blue violet, brilliant purple, brilliant blue, hooker’s green, titanium white, with touches of cadmium red medium and cadmium yellow light. I enjoy the many shades I can create by blending ultramarine blue with burnt sienna and using titanium white to lighten it. Black is mostly reserved for painting the frame and adding some clarity.
My intention with this series is to provide a mood of unpredictability, wildness, fierceness, and also anger born of frustration. Subjects scream, growl, pinch, bite, or whip up a storm! Each canvas is a manageable 12 x 12 inch size. Painted frames include a border design, either of wild grapevine, which grows untended all over the south (and is also edible), or of the image escaping the border into the painted frame edge.
I exclusively use Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylic paints because these have a thick, smooth consistency, are highly pigmented, and are great for blending.
